Pete Rose to the Hall of Fame - Haters Welcome?

Should Pete Rose be in the hall of fame (why or why not) %26amp; should the MLB delete the character and integrity requirements of Rule 5?





Rule 5 designates 6 areas that voting members should keep in mind when considering who to put into the HOF. Integrity and character considerations count for less than record and playing ability. The Pete Rose Controversy speaks directly to Baseball's difficulty and hypocrisy with regard to "character" and "integrity" issues.





There are people in the HOF who have NO character OR integrity %26amp; w/ all the Steroid ERA players that are OR will be eligible, I think it's time to look at rule 5 %26amp; Let Charlie Hustle in before these ERA gets in!

Pete Rose should be in the HOF based on his on-the-field accomplishments.





However, Pete Rose should NEVER EVER EVER EVER be reinstated to baseball. He broke Rule#1 - he bet on baseball. In baseball terms - that is the unpardonable sin.





...and, yes, there is a difference between being banned from baseball and banned from the HOF. At least there was until the late 80's when the baseball HOF deliberately re-wrote the rule specifically in order to allow them to avoid having to deal with the Pete Rose issue.
Reply:This couldn't be simpler. If Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, etc. end up making the Hall, then Rose needs to be voted in immediately, no ifs, ands, or buts.





If it were all about character, you'd have to eliminate a good half (at least!) of who's in there now for being admitted racists. Ty Cobb was one of the best baseball players of this or any era, but he was also a sociopath...and a Hall of Famer. Leo Durocher was a very well-documented womanizer who would constantly pick fights with his own teammates... and a Hall of Famer.
Reply:As a Reds fan, my heart wants him to be there but my head says he doesn't belong. He lied to the public, his fans, the Commissioner straight to their faces on numerous occasions! I wish he could go back and not have done those things and he would still be managing and be welcomed with opened arms into the Hall of Fame but unfortunately he screwed up and has to pay the price.





Now as fastaslp eloquently stated, if McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Clemens or any of the other known steroid users were to be elected to the Hall of Fame then I think it's only right to elect Mr. Rose. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Long live the memory of the Big Red Machine, they can't take that away from me or Pete!
Reply:Rule 5 is truly inadmissable any union officer would have a field day with this.


Mr.Rose most definetly should be inducted into the hall of fame he is the hits leader and a proven winner. Gambling is a serious problem or addiction if you would but it doesn't deserve the death sentence(me personally I quit gambling...........you don't believe me.......you wanna bet)


If the NFL let murdering a-s O.J. keep his status then bye God Pete should at least get the recognition he deserves!!!!!!!!!!!! Great question bye the way
Reply:Nobody hates Pete Rose. He's the all-time hit leader and he deserves to be there. But rules are rules and that's just the way it is. I feel kind of sorry for the guy because I know what it's like to have a gambling problem, but I don't make excuses and I don't expect other people to feel sorry for me. No Hall of Fame, too bad.

The Hall does NOT WANT ROSE. He is ineligible. He has done nothing to begin approaching the merest whiff of deserving consideration of reinstatement.





Why cannot the pro-Rose apologists ever think of starting with Rose and, oh, getting him into a GA meeting? Why always with blaming (and wildly confusing the purviews of) the Hall and MLB? The issue starts with Rose, it really does.

See, there is just this one rule. Minor leaguers know it. The Steinbrenners know it. Even educated fleas know it. Don't bet on the game. That's it. Hit your wife. Hit a cameraman. Pee in your pants. Don't bet on the game. How hard is that? He bet AS A MANAGER. The best position to be able to influence the outcome of the game. Baseball is bigger than Rose and doesn't need him. How about getting Ron Santo in before we even discuss Rose, which we shouldn't do because he should never go in.
Reply:I think he should be in there for his accomplishments.


I once saw an interview with him and he said"If he beat his wife or had a drug problem he would of gotten help from the league and he would still have been eligible for the hall."


He was right,he never hurt anyone and did not do drugs which in my opinion is far worse then what he did so he should already be in there.

Not to mention a below average fielder with a below average arm. And maybe he was just hustling because of the amphetamines used frequently in his playing era. Had a loaded lineup in Cincinnati around him. Mike Schmidt behind him in Philly and still only managed to hit 303 with 60 rbi a year. Let's reward great players not great longevity.
Reply:Yes. Although I am not a fan of Pete Rose, I recognize him as one of the greatest hitters to ever hold a baseball bat. It is a shame that such a great player isnt in the HOF. I would make the exact same case for Shoeless Joe Jackson. And his case hasnt even been proven. There is no evidence that he threw those games.
Reply:THE HALL OF FAME IS NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT PETE ROSE. I CONSIDER THE HALL A JOKE SIMPLY BECAUSE HE IS NOT THERE. LOOK AT SOME OTHERS THAT ARE IN THERE.
