Is my rose bush dead?

It's may and my rose bush is just brown sticks. A few weeks ago the stems seemed to be turning green. Is it dead? Should I just dig it out and start over? How do I stop that from happening again?

Is my rose bush dead?
Cut into one of the stems and see if the inside of it is green. If it is, your rose bush is alive. If it's not, then it's likely your rose bush is dead, or perhaps not blossoming this year because of the inconsistent weather. I would call a greenhouse or nursery in your area to see if they could give you any advice.
Reply:Yes, it is dead.

Digging it out and start over is a great idea, to stop it from dying again is making sure it gets enough water, but not too much ( roses are pickey with the amount of water they get ) and it should get enough sunlight, and also sometimes you may want to fertilize it,if this doesn't help it may be the rose bush you bought, maybe try another store, many people try to pay for their flowers under $5.00, sometimes the flowers are ok like that, but sometimes when they are under that price they might not have a nice quality to them.

Hope this helps! :)
Reply:Number one rule, are the canes green - alive or brown - dead. Sometimes this just happens. I didn't loose any this winter. I have lost as many as 7 one year. It is very important to plant at the correct depth and when it is fall I pile soil over the crown of the bush. Then step down all the way around to take out air pockets. So much depends on our winter conditions. I don't know what kind of rose you had but there are so many really lovely ones to choose from.

Good luck and happy gardening.
Reply:No, it is not dead. Leave them in there. When it gets warm it will turn green again. Make sure it gets water everyday, and add some rose food to it once in a while. I have a rose garden in my backyard and at the beginning that was happening to me, but when I researched about it i fixed it.
Reply:it's probably not dead, mine done the same thing this year. I just pruned them down to the place to where you can bend it but it won't break.mine are already growing back up on a trellis...I guess maybe we need to fertilize them more in the fall.
Reply:dude i had a rose bush that died then it came back to life in the spring, summer, maybe it is just on vacation for a minute and will be back.
