I just bought a chilean rose haired tarantula a few days ago. I bought a book and all and asked tons of qustions. I looked up my research so I wouldn't do things wrong. Yet I wanted to ask whats normal behavior for a chilean rose hair when you first bring it home. I believe its a she but the vivarium store wasn't sure. They told me that they had her about a year and that she was caught in the wild. I don't believe she's ever molted because they told me she never molted with them. Truthfully Im just afraid that she might be in shock from getting her home. All she really does is sit on top of her little hut under the light.I make sure its around 75 to 85F so she's warm. Remember Im only a beginner and Im just most likely over reaction. ^^
Chilean Rose Haired Tarantula Question/Normal Behavior?
Chilean Rose tarantulas are very slow moving spiders. Some hobbiest refer to them as the pet rock of the tarantulas. They basically don't do too much in terms of moving. However they are great beginner spiders because of their ease of care.
She sounds perfectly normal, mine does the same thing(she just hangs on the wall of the cage).
Reply:There are ways to tell if your tarantula is a female or not. It is easiest to tell after they molted so you can look at their shedded skin. There are plenty of websites on how to tell the gender by looking at it. Hopefully it is a female because they live WAY longer than males. Almost longer than cats or dogs if you take proper care of them.
A way to tell if she is going to molt is if she hides and does not eat for awhile. My tarantula just recently molted and is doing fine now. Good for you for keeping the tank warm, but be aware that she will be more hungry so you need to feed her more.
It's strange that she hasn't molted in that long if she is young. Is she large? Because the bigger she is, the less she will molt. Make SURE you keep the tank at the proper humidity. She will rest near/on the water dish if your tank is too dry and that COULD BE FATAL to your tarantula if she molts! Good luck with your tarantula!
Reply:That's pretty typical for a rose hair. So long as it's abdomen looks normal and it has drinking water and eats, it's probably fine. A happy spider is usually just sitting still.. If it was pacing then that could be a problem..
